Sri Lanka police seize over 90 car number plates

Sri Lankan police seized 91 vehicle number plates from a train in a Tamil-majority northeastern town, the military said today, sparking some concern in the capital that Tamil rebels could be planning a car bomb attack. Military Spokesman Brig Prasad Samarasinghe, however, said it was still unclear exactly where the plates were being taken or what their intended use was. "We don't know what their plan is, but we are investigating, but the number plates were found in Trincomalee on a train that had originated in Colombo," he said, correcting an earlier report that the train was heading to the capital.

UF License Plates Are No. 1 Seller

Already No. 1 in basketball and football, the University of Florida now also leads the state in the sales of specialty license plates. Figures from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles on Tuesday show the state sold or renewed 90,436 UF automobile tags in 2006, edging out the No. 2-ranked "Protect the Panther" tag that sold 87,806. The panther plate was the best seller in 2005.
 
'Choose Life' ruling may open floodgates on specialty plates

A federal court ruling could open up specialty license plates to anyone who can find 800 buyers, regardless of the message to be conveyed, a secretary of state's spokesman said Tuesday. U.S. District Judge David Coar on Monday ordered Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White to issue specialty plates with the slogan "Choose Life," even though the General Assembly had not approved them. A group called Choose Life Illinois Inc. had filed a lawsuit against White after approval of the plates was twice bottled up in the legislature.
